Dark of the Moon
Spoilers ahead so if you have not seen this movie you may not want to read. I talk about scenes actually happening in the movie which could ruin it for you.
So I just watched the third Transformers movie and then I finally decided to head over to IMDB to see how much bitching had been done over it. Now I knew from the previous movies that people were in rage over what had been done with the beloved Transformers, I may have been one of them in the start but not as vocal. Even then it was more an annoyance with namechanges and look changes to the alternate modes.
Now everyone that loves Transformers loves the original series, G1. They compare every other version of Transformers to it but I’ve come down from that myself. To compare it to something else that has been recently rebooted, there is Thundercats. I loved the original as a kid but looking at it now as an adult you see the many weird things that went on there, things we wouldn’t put up with at this day. Seeing things as a child is easier, we care less about the things on the side, we are attracted to the essence of a show rather than the effects or whatever.
For Transformers, I haven’t even seen half of the shows they made about it. From what I have seen however the original series remain my favourite together with Beast Wars. I look at the three movies as a reboot, much like they are doing with the Batman movie franchise. I’ve decided to not look at how things are established in older series or comic books, which I’ve never read because over here we don’t have all that much ‘foreign’ comics, but rather than this being a new way to look at Transformers. Sure I know where it came from but that is with everything that gets redone years after the original.
So the third movie. I liked it, it started a bit slow but eventually the story pulled me in. While there was plenty of action it are the rare emotional moments that stood out to me. Like when they are saying their goodbyes after being outcast, I got goosebumps when Optimus and Bumblebee said their goodbyes to Sam. The scene where they are captured in the city and they lead Bumblebee to be executed… I was hoping for something to happen because while the animated movie and live action movie deaths of Optimus were a blow (especially the first one since I was still a kid. Like holy hell, Optimus dies for real!) but Bumblebee has always been my favourite. Throughout everything I was of course hoping they wouldn’t send me back to that childhood memory of having Optimus die once again and perhaps this time for good as it’s the final movie.
So yeah, where as most hated it, I liked it. Sure there are things off but fuck it. For a ‘reboot’ I thought it was nice because if you allow yourself to forget the past and pretend this is your first introduction to the Transformers, it is what it is, a good action movie with a few annoying parts in it as plenty of movies have and which people still love.
Also remember that while we may regret that for children now this is their introduction to the Transformers, they will love it just like we in our childhood loved our introduction to them.
